“That Maruyama names his series Kusho, “writing in the sky,” speaks to this personal history as well as a remarkable art historical legacy, a bridging of western modernism with eastern aesthetics that date back to the beginning of civilization. These works -so graphically expressive that they first appear to be ink and brush studies- have much to say about the medium of photography. They remind us that the photograph is more than a “mirror with a memory,” as one of the earliest iterations, the daguerreotype, was called. It is also a space of extraordinary conceptual, spiritual, and aesthetic possibilities.”
